How to measure SEO progress

Separate completed work, search visibility, useful visits and qualified enquiries in an SEO measurement plan.

Use four layers of measurement

Implementation, visibility, engagement and business outcomes describe different parts of progress. A repaired page is an implementation result. More relevant impressions suggest visibility. A reader exploring related services is an engagement signal. A qualified enquiry is closer to business value. Report these separately so one improvement does not stand in for everything else.

Agree on a baseline

Record your priority services, target customers and the existing data available. Note tracking gaps, recent website changes, promotions and seasonal demand. Compare equivalent periods where possible, while explaining differences in conditions. A low starting number can make a percentage look dramatic; include absolute values when communicating material changes.

Define a qualified enquiry

A contact is not automatically a suitable customer. Decide what matters: service fit, geography, budget range, timing or another business requirement. Keep the definition consistent across reporting periods. If enquiry quality is assessed by the sales team, establish a simple way to capture that outcome without exposing unnecessary personal information in reports.

Treat attribution carefully

Customers may encounter several channels before contacting a business. Analytics can show useful patterns but may miss cross-device activity, blocked tracking and offline conversations. Avoid claiming that a single page or tactic caused all subsequent revenue. Use the available evidence to inform decisions and state the practical limits of the measurement.

Build a repeatable review

For each reporting period, summarize what changed, what the data shows, what remains uncertain and what should happen next. Break out major template or topic changes when possible. Investigate unexpected movements before assigning a cause. A report should help choose the next action, not simply repeat a dashboard.

A practical reporting template

Use four headings: completed work with acceptance evidence; visibility for priority pages and topics; engagement and qualified contacts; next actions with owners. Include the reporting dates and important caveats. Our working approach connects this reporting structure to the plan and implementation milestones.
