What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making useful information easy to find, understand and use in an answer. It starts with the questions your customers actually ask, then develops clear explanations supported by relevant evidence. AEO complements technical SEO and good editorial work; it is not a separate guarantee of inclusion in an AI response.
Start with a real question
A broad page about “business growth” is less useful than a clear explanation of a decision your customer faces. For example, an online retailer may need to know whether a product variant requires a separate page. Build the answer around the decision, explain exceptions, and link to the implementation details. Answer the question early, then add the context a person needs to act responsibly.
Connect answers to evidence
Use original experience, documented methods, visible authorship and verifiable sources where they strengthen the explanation. Define the business, service and terminology consistently. Tables help compare trade-offs; examples show how advice works in practice. Dates should reflect meaningful publication or review, rather than cosmetic freshness. Structured data must agree with the visible page.
Keep the SEO foundation healthy
Google’s guidance says its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special extra markup required. Pages still need to be accessible and eligible for indexing. Our AEO work therefore includes important internal links, clear page structure and appropriate snippet controls alongside the content work. Other systems use their own retrieval and citation methods, so results vary.
Measure what you can actually observe
Record a defined set of relevant questions, the systems checked, the date and the cited source when a citation appears. Treat those observations as samples, not universal rankings. Review referral traffic where available, qualified enquiries and the performance of the underlying pages. A single successful answer does not establish lasting visibility, and a citation does not prove it caused a sale.
