The short answer
SEO helps people discover useful web pages in search. AEO emphasizes information that directly answers a question and can be understood in an answer-led experience. They share foundations: accessible content, a clear subject, useful explanations and reliable evidence. AEO extends the way you plan and assess content; it does not eliminate the need for a working website.
A practical example
Imagine a company that installs commercial refrigeration. A service page explains the work, who it serves and how to request a quote. A supporting guide answers “When should a walk-in cooler be repaired rather than replaced?” The guide outlines the decision factors and links to the service. The answer helps a reader understand the problem, while the connected service page makes the next step clear.
Where the work overlaps
Both approaches benefit from descriptive headings, ordinary crawlable links, coherent page relationships and content that matches the reader’s task. A concise opening answer helps orientation, but it should be followed by the reasoning, exceptions and evidence. A page that merely repeats a question without resolving it is unlikely to be useful to a person, regardless of its formatting.
What to change in a content brief
Add the specific question, an early answer, the evidence required to support it, important limitations and related follow-up questions. Decide who can validate the explanation. Use tables only when the information is genuinely comparative. Keep your business identity and service descriptions consistent. These are editorial improvements, not secret instructions that force an AI platform to recommend you.
How to evaluate progress
Measure the work completed and the behavior you can observe. Search impressions, visits, useful contact activity and sampled citations answer different questions. If you track answers, use a documented question set and record which system, date and sources were involved. Avoid treating a single screenshot as a permanent ranking. Look for patterns over time and connect them to business-relevant outcomes.
A sensible first step
Select one important service and list the five questions a well-informed customer asks before contacting you. Review whether your existing pages answer them clearly. Improve the missing explanation before creating a large new collection of pages. Our AEO service overview describes how this can become a scoped project.
